Cutting agent (interesting read on cannabis contamination in europe)

Most "hard" street drugs are adulterated to some degree or another. The cutting agent used depends upon the properties of the drug to be "cut". Other drugs, such as LSD, peyote, and hallucinogenic mushrooms are rarely (if at all) adulterated. The same is true for marijuana in many parts of the world, although this has been disproven by recent events in a number of European countries. (March 2007)

In Europe, there is currently an epidemic of marijuana cut with Taiwanese roadmarking materials, and ground-up glass, silica and sugar. In some areas of France and the United Kingdom, it is difficult to get marijuana that has not been cut with these substances. (March 2007) The health effects of smoking these substances is not yet known, but the French government's health ministry has issued an official warning and has a telephone hotline for people who do use this marijuana, recommending them to see their doctor and have their throat and lungs checked. In at least two proven cases, people using this adulterated marijuana have been hospitalized with serious respiratory disease symptoms such as coughing up blood.

Quote from the UK Department of Health "The Department of Health has recently received information suggesting that batches of herbal and 'skunk-type' cannabis have been contaminated with microscopic glass-like beads (or possibly ground glass). Laboratory testing has since confirmed a number of cases from a number of different parts of the country, in which cannabis appears to contain microscopic particles of glass. We have no information on other types of cannabis such as resin." (March 2007, see link below)

Hashish in Europe is usually cut with a number of substances, some of which are potentially harmful to health, such as turpentine. Neil Montgomery of the university of Edinburgh has published a report naming these substances.

When choosing a cutting agent, the illegal drug manufacturer or dealer would ideally attempt to find a chemical that is inexpensive, easy to obtain, relatively non-toxic, and mimics the physical attributes of the drug to be adulterated. For example, if a drug is soluble in water, the preferred adulterant would also be water-soluble. Similar melting and boiling points are also important if the drug is to be smoked. In other cases, the illegal drug manufacturer might choose harmful cutting agents, an example of which would be the powdery substances now found on much of the marijuana sold in Europe (March 2007).

But seriously anyone who buys any form of contaminated weed should really feel stupid, we have not had no press coverage (apart good ol' Derek on ITV) although im sure the entire cannabis using community are in the know about this issue thanks to websites like ukcia, 420 etc

How many years does this have to go on before you grit smokers actually stop buying? How many times does someone have to say dont buy grit until you actually stop buying?

I do hope god gives all you gritsmokers out there the strength to stop buying this filthy crap.

Not all smokers come onto sites like this so not all smokers know about the contamanation.

Maybe people do know about certain types of contamanation but not others.

When i tell ppeople about it they say 'yeah the grit weed i do the test for that, theres no crunching' etc, but we know there are lots more types of contam.

Also not everyone really knows how proper bud should look so they are unaware and think the stuff on it is thc, most young people start out smoking soapbar so when they see this dodgy weed its all they know until there told or see sites like this and so on.

When ya tell people what there smoking is dodgy they get all defensive.

its all well and good saying that mate, but its not as easy as all that is it? if i didnt buy the stuff i simply wouldnt have had any for the last 2 years, the people you have to buy it from are often less than savory characters at the best of times so saying "sorry im not buying this nasty s**t" doesnt seem like the best idea. in this day and age just finding someone who will supply you with anything at all is hard enough.

with the exception of the odd one or two batches a mate has managed to get and the time i spent in amsterdam i havent smoked decent weed in years. whilst id love to have the connections to just say ill go elsewhere but there really is little other option, so most of the time its a case of making the best of it, running it through a crystal collecting grinder a few times to reduce the crap as much as possible

the sad thing in all this is it doesnt really need to happen at all, if they wanted to make more cash why not just charge more for the stuff, id be more than happy to pay 30 quid for a decent clean eighth than 20 for a nasty contaminated one
