Hi,
I too have a Blue Meanie and use it to smoke every now and then. It is healthier not because it burns away carcinogens but rather because as the herb is heated to a set temperature rather than actually "burnt" much of the muck you might normally inhale remains in the solid remains. The plan being to vapourise the THC etc. out of the rest of the plant matter.
That aside, personally I must admit to finding it very easy on my throat compared to other methods! Sometimes it almost seems like smoking nothing to me, so perhaps you are sort of trying too hard to inhale if you are used to other methods? I find it a very different approach to the high, I'll be sitting there having a few tokes thinking nothing's happening, and all of a sudden a big smile will hit my face and I'll realise I am actually quite stoned after all :-) Some element of patience is needed from that point of view.
With regard to the jar getting coated in tarry stuff, I guess some residue is inevitable, but if it gets extremely coated that is a bit unusual. What are you smoking? If it is some dodgy resin soapbar type stuff, perhaps it contains adulterants that vapourise below the temperature of the Blue Meanie's heat source so they float about and that is causing the problem. This of course means you'll be inhaling them too, which is not nice. If this is the case all I can suggest is you either try and get hold of 'cleaner' cannabis, often the buds are purer than resin, but its not a 100% rule. Or if it is not possible, maybe try cleaning your resin a bit. Otherwise I'm not sure.
For smoking tips, I would emphasise patience - I find vapouriser smoking quite different from spliff/bong/pipe smoking in that the effects creep up a little more, and take longer to get going. The high can also be subjectively different, sometimes a bit more trippy and less sleepy, but of course it depends on what you are smoking and how your body and mind react. Grate up your plant matter/resin as fine as possible before putting it on the hot plate, and don't put too much on as it is a waste. Little amounts, often refilled to me is better than large amounts in one go. Give it time to heat up vapourise - it's not instant.
Oh and watch your fingers - it gets very very hot!
Just my opinion. Other than that, practice makes perfect so keep trying??!
Hope that helps, good luck with the new equipment.
Cheers,
Adam
