Fractured Spine

Thursday 02 Oct 2008

6 years ago I had an accident and fell down an old abandoned slate quarry in
Wales, Northwest England. I now suffer with what is known as a compressed
fracture of the T12 vertebrae, which means that two of the vertebrae in my
spine are fused or wedged together permanently. This condition will not
heal nor will it worsen provided i dont have anymore serious falls of
course.

This ruined my career within the IT Industry as it meant that i could not
(and still cannot) sit at a desk for any reasonable length of time without
experiencing serious discomfort and pain. I fell into depression, living
off benefits in sheltered accomodation, lost my path for a few years. And
during this time i endured all manner of therapies and pharmaceuticals as a
way of dealing with my symptoms.

None of these were effective for long. The best of which was extra strong
co-codamol (opiate based) tablets combined with anti-inflammatory tablets,
both having to be administered 3-4 times daily and leaving me in a
zombie-like state for the most part of the day, drifting in and out of
consciousness.

It was during this time that i had the idea to try cannabis as an aid, i had
heard of it being used for chronic pain symptoms in others and knew somebody
who smoked it daily to combat his MS. I thought i had nothing to lose and
had fond memories of using the drug as a teenager so thought why not?!

Ever since then it has proved to be a godsend, my life completely
transformed, I had reclaimed.. myself! I was since able to get off
incapacity benefits and start actively seeking work, as i now didn't suffer
the discomfort nor was i in a comatose, dribbling state.. I am able to
function with ease on my day to day tasks and now work on construction sites
(which keeps me active and prevents me seizing up!) as an Electrical
Labourer. Obviously I do not indulge in cannabis during work hours (1st
thing in the morning and during the evening though) but only as a matter of
health & safety, not because i cannot function or concentrate. Also, these
days it is a requirement to partake in random drug tests (upon selection)
on-site and should you fail you face instant removal from site and a black
mark against your name on the contractors register that lasts 5 years!!!??

I live with this over my head but take this risk willingly as the comfort
and freedom it gives me.. I recently watched a documentary based in the U.S.
about medical marijuana and the thousands upon thousands (if not more)
people who benefit from the legal dispensaries they have over there.. I
would happily sign any petition or put my name to anything that supported
such a cause in this country as i think that there has to be many more
besides me that have to endure what they're prescribed and not have any
alternatives available.

or anyone reading this who finds themselves in this situation, i highly
recommend doing some research for yourself. If your a non-smoker there are
varous methods for ingesting cannabis and I urge you to try them if you feel
your at the end of your tether.
