Chronic Pancreatitis

Sunday 18 Oct 2009

I was diagnosed with Chronic Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) around 5 years ago. It is recognised as being one of the most painful conditions you can have second only to bone cancer, other symptoms include nausea and vomiting and general malabsorbtion. The only treatment is pain management (usually opiate based) and strict dietary behaviour. I had smoked cannabis regularly for many years prior to my illness but have since found it allows me to keep my opiate consumption down to a minimum and is significant in helping with the nausea, in fact I no longer need any prescribed nausea drugs (which is great because the side effects of both analgesics and anti nausea drugs usually include impotence and lack of libido among many other side effects). It also helps with appetite which can be important in many cases. I gave up tobacco and alcohol when diagnosed because both have serious (pancreatic cancer)implications when you have my illness, therefore I use a pipe and cook with Cannabis. I hope this helps?
