Early Day Motions

An Early Day Motion (EDM) is a device used by MPs within the House of Commons. An EDM can be instigated by an MP for almost any issue that concerns them. EDMs rarely lead on to a full Parliamentary debate - their purpose is mainly to draw attention to an issue that concerns that MP, to publicise the issue and allow the MP to canvass support. An EDM is usually in the form of a statement signed by the MP who tables it, and hence forms an on-record show of their viewpoint on the issue. Other MPs can be canvassed and are invited to add their signatures to it to show they agree with its content. As such an EDM is also a gauge of the level of support by MPs for the issue.

There have been several EDMs which concern the reforming of laws on cannabis. UKCIA has collated some on the following pages and we include a list of who has so far signed the EDM. If your MP has not signed it as yet, write to them and ask them to endorse and sign the motion! If you are unsure as to who your MP is or how to contact them, go to the Constituency Locata here.

For more information on how EDMs work, there is a House of Commons factsheet with more details.

The EDMs are numbered incrementally, and begin again at "1" at the start of each Parliamentary session. Choose a session below and the EDMs for that session will be displayed.
