The figures in brackets are those deaths with a mention of alcohol and are included in the non-bracketed figures.

Deaths from alcohol for 1992 are those that were registered in the year, deaths for the years 1993-96 are those that occurred.

The route of administration (i.e., whether swallowed, injected, inhaled, etc.) of a toxic substance is not usually specified on the death certificate. The data above represent all mentions of drugs, however administered, where the death was certified as due to poisoning, drug dependence or non-dependent abuse of drugs.

(5) If, for example, both heroin and cannabis are mentioned on a death certificate, the death will occur twice in the table, once under 'Heroin with other drugs' and once under 'Cannabis with other drugs'.

(6) Data supplied by St. George's Hospital Medical School and are those deaths involving all volatile substances, including glue.

(7) Deaths certified as due to alcoholic psychoses, alcohol dependence syndrome, non-dependent abuse of alcohol, alcoholic cardiomyopathy, chronic liver disease and cirrhosis, and toxic effects of alcohol

(15) Number of deaths where the substance was mentioned on the death certificate. Where, for example, both heroin and cannabis are mentioned on a death certificate, the death will occur twice in the table, once under 'Heroin with other drugs' and once under 'Cannabis with other drugs'.

(16) Data are supplied by St. George's Hospital Medical School and are those deaths involving all volatile substances, including solvents.

(17) Paracetamol is one of the ingredients in co-proxamol. When ONS quantifies deaths from paracetamol, they include deaths where co-proxamol and other paracetamol compounds are mentioned on the death certificate under 'paracetamol with other drugs'. Hence this method is used here and deaths attributed to co-proxamol are also included under 'paracetamol with other drugs'.

(18) Deaths certified as due to alcoholic psychoses, alcohol dependence syndrome, non-dependent abuse of alcohol, alcoholic cardiomyopathy, chronic liver disease and cirrhosis, and toxic effects of alcohol.

(19) The Health Education Authority estimates the number of deaths of people in the UK as a result of their own smoking in 1988 as 110,000 and in 1995 as 120,000. No sub-national breakdowns are available

The figures correspond to the number of deaths where the substances were mentioned on the death certificate or were identified following investigation. Where, for example, both heroin and temazepam were involved, each will be counted in the table; once under 'heroin with other drugs' and once under 'temazepam with other drugs'. The figures in brackets are those deaths with a mention of alcohol and are included in the non-bracketed figures. None of these cases is included in line (k) which covers deaths certified as due to alcoholic psychoses, alcohol dependence syndrome, non-dependent abuse of alcohol, alcoholic cardiomyopathy, chronic liver disease and cirrhosis, and toxic effects of alcohol.

Data for years prior to 1994 are available but there are undercounts of the types of drugs involved due to the methods of data collection and processing in use at the time. From 1994, a new method was introduced which gives a more accurate count of drug deaths. Data for 1993 are not directly comparable and are provided for information purposes only.

Deaths from drug-related causes in England and Wales, 1988-97

June 1998

Letter from Tim Holt to Mrs. Gwyneth Dunwoody, dated 25 June 1998:

As Director of the Office for National Statistics (ONS), I have been asked to reply to your parliamentary question on the number of drug-related deaths occurring in each of the past 10 years. The data requested are shown in the table below:

Year Number of deaths
1988 2,061
1989 1,942
1990 2,041
1991 2,053
1992 2,287
1993 2,252
1994 2,405
1995 2,563
1996 2,722
1997 2,816

Note:

Deaths data for the years 1988-1992 and 1997 correspond to deaths registered in the year, deaths data for the years 1993-1996 relate to deaths that occurred during the year.

The deaths correspond to those with an underlying cause of death of drug psychoses, drug dependence, non-dependent abuse of drugs, accidental poisoning by drug or medicament, suicidal poisoning by drug or medicament, poisoning by drug or medicament undetermined whether accidentally or purposefully inflicted, or assault by poisoning--drugs and medicaments.

Substances mentioned in the records of deaths assigned to accidental and other poisoning by solid or liquid substances, England and Wales 1993-1996

July 1998

The attached table lists all substances mentioned in the records of deaths assigned to accidental and other poisoning by solid or liquid substances.

Often a number of drugs (including alcohol) are listed on the death certificate. If, for example, both heroin and cannabis are mentioned on a death certificate, the death will occur twice in the table, once under 'Heroin' and once under 'Cannabis'.

1993 1994 1995 1996
Heroin 55 90 129 187
Ecstasy 13 23 10 12

(4) Figures are for mentions of the word 'paracetamol' only and not any of the associated compounds, although co-proxamol has been given separately as requested

(5) Data supplied by St. George's Hospital Medical School and includes those deaths involving all volatile substances. Figures for 1996 will appear shortly in their report 'Trends in Deaths Associated with Abuse of Volatile Substances 1971-1996. Report 11'
